Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Directing for a Drama Series

Nominees are listed in alphabetical order by show. Beware of minor spoilers for listed episodes.

Tim Van Patten, Boardwalk Empire (Eldorado)
David Nutter, Game of Thrones (Mother's Mercy)
Jeremy Podeswa, Game of Thrones (Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken)
Lesli Linka Glatter, Homeland (From A to B and Back Again)
Steven Soderbergh, The Knick (Method and Madness)

This is the fourth year in a row that “Boardwalk Empire” has been nominated for its season finale, which in this case is the series finale, earning Patten his fifth consecutive nomination and ninth overall. Nutter and Podeswa have each been nominated once before for helming another HBO series. “Game of Thrones” has been nominated twice before in this race. Linka Glatter was nominated for another “Homeland” episode two years ago, and this marks the third overall bid for the series. This is the first Emmy nomination for Oscar winner Soderbergh, who helmed the pilot for Cinemax’s new series.

What should win: “Mother’s Mercy”
What will win: I think the pilot of The Knick will win Soderbergh his first Emmy.
