What I’m Watching: Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones: Season 1, Episode 7 “AKA Top Shelf Perverts” (B+)

Jessica is not in good shape, and after nearly sending herself to prison for the rest of her life, she didn’t end up in a much better situation as she found a different way to sacrifice herself. Coming home to find poor banana bread-baking Ruben murdered by Kilgrave on her bed was a horrific sight, and it’s just the latest instance of this show going over the edge to demonstrate just how evil Kilgrave is, happy to kill someone just because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and then content to leave him to destroy Jessica for a few minutes. Before Jessica hatched the plan to head to supermax prison, however, she was enraged enough to dangle Wendy over a train platform, a frightening plan that ultimately just prompted Wendy to fight back even harder against Jeri, who got herself into trouble with Pam for not coming clean about all the skeletons in her closet. Kilgrave showing up at the police station and forcing all the cops to point guns at each other was intense, and at least it’s good that Jessica got to her childhood home now before Kilgrave decided to hurt anyone else to conceal his master plan. I liked seeing Trish and the ever-protective Malcolm interact, and it’s good that Jessica has loyal friends on her side who Kilgrave is hopefully underestimating. Meeting Trish’s mother and seeing a snapshot of Jessica’s childhood explain some of her steely exterior to be sure.
