Pilot Review: You, Me, Her

You, Me, Her (Audience Network)
Premiered March 22 at 9pm

I tuned into this show almost by chance since I nearly didn’t know about its premiere, and I’m so glad I did. It reminds me most of “Casual,” another unassuming dramatic comedy from a network not known for its diverse slate of original programming but slowly building to that status. It wasn’t clear at first what this show was about, and it’s hard to defend the decision of Greg Poehler’s Jack to hire an escort as an ill-advised attempt to spice up his marriage. What I love is that the show is just as much about Izzy and the fact that she crossed plenty of lines in her first date with Jack. Things only got more appealing as this first episode went on, with Emma responding intensely by hiring Izzy herself and then the escort defying expectations once again by making quite the move on Emma, who was all for it despite her initial shock. I have no idea where things go from here, but all three of these main characters are exceptionally interesting, and I’m so curious to see how their lives will continue to play out together as they embark on some sort of continued relationship. I didn’t recognize Poehler, who I’ve seen before on “Welcome to Sweden,” and I’m not familiar with either Rachel Blanchard, who plays Emma, or Priscilla Faia, a truly exceptional find as Izzy. I’m definitely planning to stick around to get to know this show, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

How will it work as a series? Since Emma was very honest with Jack after he was honest with her, it’s a good bet that they’re both going to continue seeing Izzy in some capacity. As long as all three remain complex, three-dimensional characters, I imagine that this strange threesome will prove very enticing as more of its interactions are featured.
How long will it last? It’s nearly impossible to find any data on how this show did in its debut airing or even its second installment this past week, so I don’t know what kind of accurate prediction I can make. Based on this pilot, however, I think that this show could well be a strong and enduring hit.

Pilot grade: B+
