What I’m Watching: Orphan Black

Orphan Black: Season 4, Episode 6 “The Scandal of Altruism” (B+)

I did not see this twist coming, and it’s so interesting because it represents a total changing of the game. Susan Duncan seemed to be such a villain, especially as she treated Rachel, previously thought of as a bad guy, so horribly. Evie Cho, on the other hand, appeared to represent a lighter side of things, one more compassionate who was more of a pawn in the grand scheme. That was even the case in the first half of this episode, as she and Cosima coolly extracted the chip from Sarah’s cheek. Destroying the cells that could heal the Castor gene was a big get for our clones, and it seemed like everything would be fine until Sarah noticed that something was up. Tying in Evie’s master plan with Beth’s death, namely identifying her as the sole cause of Beth’s suicide, makes her betrayal all the more devastating. More importantly, she wants to forget about the clones altogether, with no aims to advance the research and instead deliberate desire to suppress any development so that she can see the way of the future. Kendall was an unfortunate casualty, and I have no idea where everyone goes from here. On a lighter note, Krystal’s inability to comprehend even the most basic of stories invented by Art and Felix was highly entertaining, with her perplexed reaction to the mention of Scotland Yard standing out as my favorite line of hers. It’s good to have Krystal around to make sure things don’t get too deadly serious!
