What I’m Watching: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 2, Episode 9 “Kimmy Meets a Drunk Lady” (B+)

It’s always fun to see those behind the scenes stepping in front of the camera to have a good time. Tina Fey already guest-starred on this show and earned an Emmy nomination last year along with four other writing and producing bids, and now she’s back playing a totally different but equally unaware character. Andrea was entertaining because she was so completely destructive at night, a terrible influence on poor, unassuming Kimmy and then so straight-laced and serious during the day when she went in to start officially seeing her as a therapist. Night Andrea blackmailing Day Andrea into seeing Kimmy by threatening to expose her misdeeds was an amusing way to resolve it, and I hope that their time together will help Kimmy realize some positive things about her life and her trajectory. With Jacqueline nowhere to be found and Lillian referenced only by a fleeting “Run, Lillian!” comment, the rest of the focus of the episode was left to Titus, so continually stuck in the past that he walked into a Best Buy to try to purchase a new rack for his cassette tapes, all of which were a freaky version of the once-popular “Now” series. I thought that he’d construct some magnificent storage system with the random assortment of supplies he cobbled together, but as usual things didn’t always end up being so rosy, and his structure was deplorably insufficient. At least he has those weird songs to keep him going, and one day he’ll move into the twenty-first century with new technology like “wiffy.”
