What I’m Watching: The Detour

The Detour: Season 2, Episode 7 “The Heat” (B+)

This show is so superbly ridiculous that you have to wonder where they come up with it. The revelation of the existence of USPIS was ripe for a number of jokes more sophisticated than just the unfortunate pronunciation of its letters, and while I haven’t seen “Hamilton,” I have to assume that the snippet of the fake musical that we saw is a spot-on parody that, for some strange reason, is all about the mail. I couldn’t figure it out until just now, but it makes so much sense that Laura Benanti, who previously starred on “Supergirl” and in the Broadway musical “She Loves Me,” plays Edie, the one so doggedly obsessed with taking down our protagonists, apparently going to seriously high and low levels to pin something on them on the road to taking down Big Tuna. I also just saw Mamoudou Athie, who plays her lapdog slash almost sex partner Carl, in “One Percent More Humid,” which will screen at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. Debating how fourteen mail service workers have died since the beginning was my favorite part of the whole USPIS plotline, though the SWAT guys cringing as Nate and Robin almost shot themselves in the face was great too. The insanely specific and truly odd assortment of porn available at the clinic was another highlight, and why Jareb thought that hitting his post-vasectomy father in the groin not once but twice was yet another instance of why he’s the best character on this show.
