Atlanta: Season 2, Episode 1 “Alligator Man” (B)
After almost a year and a half off the air, this Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy Series and Emmy winner for acting and directing is back. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about this show even though I did like it, and I think it’s returning at an even more relevant time where it can feature a character like Florida Man, who is apparently based off of a real meme that deals with absurd stories that begin with the headline “Florida Man.” I prefer the idea of this Florida Man to the B.A.N. featured in season one, and it seems that we definitely have some darker themes going with this “Robbin’ Season” subtitle, starting with that violent opening at the fast-food restaurant. Earn is living in a storage unit while Paper Boi and Darius aren’t talking to each other, and Earn calling Paper Boi’s girlfriend by the wrong name didn’t help anything. It’s nice to see Lakeith Stanfield, whose profile has risen considerably following “Get Out” and three movies at Sundance this year (I saw two) since season one, back as Darius, whose best line of the hour was “I would say nice to meet you, but I don’t believe in time as a concept.” A close runner-up was Uncle Willy’s argument that they weren’t domestic since they’re not even married, though letting him alligator out so that he could try to make a break for it was a considerably memorable finale for him. I’m not sure what to expect from this season of this show, but I’ll definitely be watching.
