What I’m Watching: Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones: Season 2, Episode 5 “AKA God Help the Hobo” (B+)

Not since tempers flamed and violence erupted on “Do the Right Thing” has New York City felt so unbearably hot. That sensation was just one of many things that led Jessica to terrify the other members of her anger management class after she broke the ball while listing the many horrible things that have provoked her over the years, and it was all part of a much more intriguing examination of who Jessica is and whether she’s fated to be irreversibly destructive. Getting framed for a brutal murder that she didn’t commit but could be capable of due to a combination of her rage and her superpowers is a problematic development, more so for her own self-confidence and mental health than for the ensuing legal battle, which top attorney Hogarth hardly seems up for taking on given her preoccupation with her own illness and how she can combat its inevitable effects. Jessica is at least doing better with Oscar, though he wants to take things way too slowly for what she needs right now. Pryce is becoming more of an issue after securing separate legal counsel and taking illegal steps to take Jessica down which have now made him think that she’s a ferocious killer. Just moments after Trish complimented Griffin on being better than all the men who came before him, he answered a call that confirms that he’s keeping something from her. While it’s probably not as bad as we think, it’s sure to go over terribly, and it’s the last thing Trish needs right now.
