Round Two: God Friended Me

God Friended Me: Season 1, Episode 2 “The Good Samaritan” (B-)

In its second airing, this show followed up in the same format as the first hour, with Miles and Cara going running into the people recommended by God on Facebook and then helping them in some way that isn’t initially apparent. It’s reminiscent of “Touch,” Kiefer Sutherland’s return to TV after “24,” and it’s avoiding most of its hokeyness by limiting God’s actual presence to the profile picture turning from sunny skies to thunderstorms to indicate approval of or anger towards Miles’ actions. Tracing God’s IP address to Hell’s Kitchen is a device that doesn’t need to continue being featured, though I suppose it helped Rakesh to realize how he needed to proceed in his budding relationship. I neglected to mention last week the presence of a performer I wasn’t sure would be returning for subsequent episodes - Rachel Bay Jones, who took home a Tony for playing the title character’s mom in “Dear Evan Hansen” and here plays Susan, Cara’s mom. It looks like Cara’s family dynamic isn’t the only one that might be improving, after Reverend Finer took his son’s words to heart when he came to the bar and decided to actually listen to what his son has been saying on his show. Opting to decline a big boost from Eric showed that Miles is willing to keep his mind open. I’ll do the same with this show though I’m not sold just yet.
