What I’m Watching: Shameless

Shameless: Season 9, Episode 5 “Black Haired Ginger” (B+)

This show is always full of depravity, but there isn’t usually so much sex with all of the Gallaghers, particularly the two youngest family members. Liam seemed completely floored by his former bully’s abrupt decision to have sex with him, and she moved in even quicker than Cassidy did when she tried to convince Liam that he had gotten her pregnant just hours earlier. Dropping her off at a clinic may have been the right move, but I suspect that he’s not so easily rid of her. Carl’s new flame is just his kind of crazy, and her rather aggressive response to his chivalry makes it seem like she’s going to stick around and maybe even help him advance his military career. Debs tried to win Alex over but got much, much more than she bargained for, and it’s safe to say that, regardless of her sexual attractions going forward, that relationship is over. Frank’s liver is unsurprisingly failing, and naturally what he would need to keep his sex drive up was someone who was violent and crazy, played by none other than Katey Sagal of “Sons of Anarchy” fame. I’m curious if we’ll see more of Alison, played by Shannon Lucio from “The O.C.” and “Prison Break,” who was the leader of the women’s equality march association that wanted Kev to be their speaker, or if that’s it after he got scared by the traumatizing things he heard from the women. Fiona missing Ford’s big architectural tour didn’t end up being nearly as big a deal as it seemed, and she even got to a good point with her family after they kept chastising her for “going all Fiona.” Ian nearly ran again, but instead we got a sweet brotherly moment between him and an equally lost Lip, whose street racing career is hardly the uptick he needs right now. Ian’s triumphant declaration of his insanity plea was a great way to end the episode, since it shows that he’s in a good place even if his movement may be about to implode.
