What I’m Watching: Barry

Barry: Season 2, Episode 3 “Past = Present x Future Over Yesterday” (B+)

I’m glad to see that, after discovering what Barry didn’t do and then trying to kill him, Hank had a change of heart and decided to listen to his hastily offered suggestion of training his guys in exchange for righting his wrong. The Chechen mob isn’t doing all that well right now, confined to a storage container they’re planning to decorate after moving out to make room for Esther’s crew, and turning into a real army is a productive step, even if it’s not going to happen nearly as fast as Hank wants. It’s a wonder that the eternally oblivious Sally managed to miss the bullets flying through the window while she was skyping in the other room. I love that Fuches, who was already failing at trying to get Barry to admit to killing a cop, abandoned his mission entirely so that he could comfort Barry in his moment of need. After all, Barry is quite likeable and no one wants to see him hurt. It was funny to see Barry plagiarize straight from “Braveheart,” and things took a very dramatic turn after that when Sally and Gene tried to bait Barry into choking her. He’s ready to blow, and this is the worst possible time that her abusive ex could have shown up. There’s no way that he’s going to hurt Sam in front of her, but it’s surely not going to go well, and Barry revealing himself to be anything close to a violent man is going to crush her just as much as it’s going to crush him.
