What I’m Watching: Billions

Billions: Season 4, Episode 2 “Arousal Template” (B-)

This show is getting more and more ridiculous as it goes on, and I’m still watching even if I’m not terribly convinced of its quality anymore. Lines like “You’re paying me, you don’t have to thank me” demonstrate how pretty much every character on this show has become cartoonish in some way, and I’m particularly unimpressed with where Wendy’s storyline is going. In terms of the main threads, on the other hand, things aren’t so bad. I couldn’t have been more excited to see Nina Arianda, a standout player from “Goliath” and “Stan and Ollie,” show up as Rebecca Cantu, who quickly became a new business and romantic partner for Axe. She learned right away what kind of person he was, and she seems to be aware of how to deal with him. She’s a fantastic actress, and I’m thrilled that she’s on board in what will hopefully be a major role. Grigor continues to be a problematic presence for anyone he interacts with, and Taylor’s decision to gloat after getting backers didn’t go too well. It is good to see that Mafee is standing up for himself and opted to make the smart decision not to hire Rudy even after Taylor gave him the go-ahead to follow his instincts and it would have been the nice thing to do. Chuck coming to Axe every time he ends up with him in his crosshairs is something that will take getting used to, but it’s working for him, and now he’s managed to officially announce his candidacy for attorney general with a great backer and an angry Bryan watching him with a mouth full of pretzel.
