What I’m Watching: Killing Eve

Killing Eve: Season 2, Episode 3 “The Hungry Caterpillar” (B)

The closeness of the relationships on this show between the law enforcement officials and the criminals is just incredible, both literally and figuratively. It’s hard to have much sympathy for Eve’s husband when he’s actually wrong, both about his colleague who is clearly attracted to him and about Eve making everything about her when Villanelle had in fact come into the building and left an apple on his desk. It’s not as if Eve was starting out from a great place by forgetting the party and rarely being present to begin with, but she also needs to focus fully on hunting the woman who is clearly so obsessed with her that she’s going to keep the chase going. I can’t imagine that Villanelle would ever hate Eve instead of loving her, and now she’s back with Konstantin, who at least will play to her strengths rather than subject her to constant supervision the way that Raymond was, though he was apparently just prepping to get rid of her altogether. This episode did contain an enlightening conversation about what it means to balance family and work in this business, with Carolyn chastising Konstantin for allowing his family to be a vulnerability. I liked the metaphor that Konstantin used with Eve about the caterpillar, made all the more effective thanks to his accent and Eve not being entirely sure what he was saying at first. On this bizarre show, it’s the unique dialogue that is often most memorable, especially as delivered by Kim Bodnia.
