Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Series

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 16th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Atlanta, Barry, Black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, GLOW, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The competition: Last year, we had eight nominees. This year, count out three of them, all of which will return at some point in the future: “Atlanta,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “Silicon Valley.” In its final season, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt could just as easily not be nominated as it could show up, and Black-ish could also fall out of the lineup as the last broadcast network holdout. GLOW doesn’t have nearly as much buzz as fellow sophomore entries Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, both of which are sure to be back. For its final season, three-time champ Veep is all but guaranteed to return after being ineligible last year. From among the new fare, Golden Globe winner The Kominsky Method stands the best chance of joining this list, as could Kidding, Russian Doll, Ramy, or Dead to Me. Some series that have likely come close in the past and could break through this year are Better Things, Fleabag, and The Good Place. Watch out for nostalgia to potentially propel The Big Bang Theory to a farewell nomination, and past favorites like Will and Grace and Modern Family could show up too.

The predicted nominees: Barry, GLOW, The Good Place, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Veep

The predicted winner: I think The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel scores a repeat win.
