Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 16th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Louie Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Tituss Burgess, Brian Tyree Henry, Tony Shalhoub, Kenan Thompson, Henry Winkler

The competition: Just two of last year’s nominees are guaranteed not to be back. Louie Anderson’s series returned this summer, eligible for next season, while Brian Tyree Henry’s show will be back at some point in the future. In this political climate, Alec Baldwin (Saturday Night Live) and Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live) seem likely to return given the satire featured so heavily on their shows, though they could easily be replaced by other costars, like Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live), or other nominees from other shows if voters have grown tired of their impressions (and Baldwin seems to have too). Defending champ Henry Winkler (Barry) and SAG winner Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will both be back, and it’s just a question of if any of their costars will also be nominated, like Stephen Root (Barry), Anthony Carrigan (Barry), or Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) feels like a sure thing too for his show’s final run. Two nominees from two years ago will probably repeat now that their show is eligible again - Tony Hale (Veep) and Matt Walsh (Veep) – though they have so many costars who could also be honored, with Timothy Simons (Veep) as both the most likely and most deserving candidate. The only real threat from a new series is Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method), who is a shoo-in. Watch out for past nominees Ty Burrell (Modern Family) or Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) to show up if voters are feeling nostalgic, and Marc Maron (GLOW) could also break through after missing out last season.

The predicted nominees: Arkin, Burgess, Hale, Shalhoub, Walsh, Winkler

The predicted winner: It’s far from certain, but I think that Hale wins again if he’s nominated.
