Golden Globe Winner Predictions: Best TV Series – Drama

The competition:
Big Little Lies aired its second season on HBO. It previously won the award for Best Miniseries or TV Film for season one back in 2017. Stars Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are nominated for their performances. This season has yet to contend at the Emmy Awards, and the ensemble is up for a SAG prize.

The Crown aired its third season on Netflix with an all-new cast. It previously won this prize for season one, along with an acting trophy for past star Claire Foy. This year, stars Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Helena Bonham Carter are nominated for their performances. This season has yet to contend at the Emmy Awards, but is up for three SAG prizes, including for its ensemble.

Killing Eve aired its second season on BBC America. It was nominated last year, when star Sandra Oh won, and now only star Jodie Comer, who took home the Emmy this past year, is nominated. Comer also contends at the SAG Awards.

The Morning Show, from Apple TV Plus, is the lone freshman series is contention. Stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are nominated for their performances. Steve Carell and Billy Crudup contend along with Aniston at the SAG Awards.

Succession aired its second season on HBO. Stars Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin are nominated for their performances. Only Culkin was nominated last year, and the show contended for Best Drama Series at the Emmy Awards for its first season.

Additional notes: Last year’s winner, “The Americans,” ended so it wasn’t in contention this year, though “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which won two years ago, was indeed eligible. “Pose” was also eligible but didn’t earn a repeat bid. Freshman series very often win this award, though it’s rare for a show to earn its first bid multiple years into its run.
Who should win? I haven’t watched any of season two of “Succession,” and I don’t think that “Killing Eve” belongs in this company. I’m one of the few who enjoyed the second season of “Big Little Lies” more than the first. From what I’ve seen of season three of “The Crown” so far, that gets my vote over another great choice, “The Morning Show.”
Who will win? I’m going to pick The Morning Show, though it could also be “The Crown” or “Succession.”
