What I’m Watching: Billions (Season Premiere)

Billions: Season 5, Episode 1 “The New Decas” (B-)

This show is debuting its latest season at a time when most others are winding down, which probably makes it seem better than it actually is since there’s not as much to look to for comparison. Last season was a bit of an aimless misfire, and I’m hoping that Chuck and Axe being back on opposite sides will help this show return to its former glory. What I’d like to see a lot less of is the stupidity that happens at Axe Cap, and hopefully Wendy bringing in a famous professional wrestler I’ve never heard of to remind them of their token ridiculousness and ferocity should help with that. It’s hard to keep track of who’s playing what game right now with Taylor letting Axe in on what he already knew about them being there as a spy for Chuck, but without confirming what they’re going to do about it and which side they’ve chosen. Wendy option to file for divorce in the public forum after attending the wedding of Chuck’s father was a bold move, and it shows that she truly wants to forge her own path, most important now that her soon-to-be-ex-husband and employer are going to be at each other’s throats again. Chuck has a good ally in Kate, who will hopefully rein him in when he becomes too blinded by a desire to get Axe and doesn’t have what he needs to take him down just yet. The introduction of Corey Stoll from “House of Cards” as Mike Prince, a new nemesis from Axe, is appealing, and I’m curious to see what Chuck thinks of him and if he’ll be an ally or an enemy for the vindictive crusader.
