What I’m Watching: Brockmire (Penultimate Episode)

Brockmire: Season 4, Episode 7 “Union Negotiations” (B+)

This season has felt very frantic in a lot of ways, covering periods of time – long and short – in a fast-paced fashion with multiple time-placing cards flashing on screen throughout the course of each episode. This second-to-last installment was no different, and the unexpected marriage of Brockmire and Jules was about as romantic as I could have predicted. I love that, even in the midst of these absurd negotiations with Paul F. Tompkins’ showy magician and his preposterously frequent required breaks, Jules felt compelled to burst into the room and give her big speech to Brockmire about having two opportunities to fall in love. She wasn’t quite as out of control as in previous episodes this season, and she even agreed to drink only white wine to convince Brockmire that she could be a stable partner for him now that he was sober. The vision of the future created by this show where an Alexa-type device can detect an irregularity while Brockmire was masturbating, use a built-in needle to take blood, and then get a doctor to show up to earn extra points by delivering his results outside of office hours is just so fascinating. He took the news of his near-instantaneous diagnosis rather well, and Jules’ response was first to want to be there for him and then to hope he suffered so that she could prove to him just what good care she could have taken if he had left her. Beth showing up and being happy for her father was particularly poignant, and I’m eager to see where the finale will take and leave us.
