What I’m Watching: Run

Run: Season 1, Episode 5 “Jump” (B)

I’m glad that our two protagonists jumped off the train since staying on and trying to figure out where Fiona went would have been hopeless and gotten irritating fast. But this was still the least enticing half-hour this show has produced yet, only because it turned into a horror movie of sorts as they entered a seemingly abandoned home in search of the crazy woman who wanted to run off with all of Billy’s money. Seeing her impaled after she jumped (or was pushed?) out the window was a gruesome sight, and they definitely didn’t notice the man who ran out the back of the house at the same moment that they bolted out the front. Ruby getting a phone call from her husband while they were in there was the definition of bad timing, and she continues to make choices that will make her inevitable return home infinitely more difficult. The opening video also makes the parameters of this “run” deal clearer, specifically that it’s meant to only be a week of traveling across America. The fact that Laurence knew Billy’s name and asked if they had slept together means that he’s well aware of what Ruby left to do even if he’s not as certain why she felt the need to leave. I knew Phoebe Waller-Bridge was going to be appearing on this show but it still took me a moment to recognize her with a hat on and an American accent, and I appreciated her short and unshowy turn as Laurel. Going back to the crime scene they couldn’t possibly locate if they tried seems like a terrible idea, but if her phone’s there, it’s going to get them into trouble with more than just Laurence.
