Emmy Catch-Up: Ozark

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. This year, I’m getting a jump start to check out the entire season of some of most high-profile shows I didn’t watch when they originally aired.

Ozark: Season 2, Episode 7 “In Case of Emergency” (B+)

Opening with Ruth being questioned by the FBI with Helen by her side underscored just how little of Marty and Wendy’s operations are actually being done in secret, with the FBI well aware of what’s going on and just trying to find the most vulnerable part of it all to crack and bring the whole thing down. Ben was very eager to leave town with Ruth, something she wasn’t at all open to, but he might have had the right idea given the beating she took as a result of her alleged but untrue role in the death of those she was supposed to meet at the drop. Though Marty said that they’ve now cut ties with the Kansas City mob, that’s not going to be enough for her, and whatever she does is going to blow back on all of them. The consequences were clear for Sue as soon as she showed up to the Byrde house with her insanely expensive new car, and for someone who’s supposed to have insight into other people, she did a terrible job of reading the meaning behind Helen’s question about whether she was being compensated appropriately. Marty and Wendy probably won’t react well to the news of her sudden disappearance, but Helen is past the point of trying to appease them in anything that she’s doing. Maya isn’t being subtle about her efforts to turn Marty, and Wendy was spot on when she refused to buy Marty’s claim that he didn’t tell her about the deal because he wasn’t going to take it.
