Emmy Catch-Up: Ozark

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. This year, I’m getting a jump start to check out the entire season of some of most high-profile shows I didn’t watch when they originally aired.

Ozark: Season 3, Episode 8 “BFF” (B)

It is interesting to see just how the Byrde children perceive their situation, with Charlotte whining to her mother about having to do community service for something she legitimately did wrong and somehow assuming that it would be anywhere near the top of Wendy’s checklist, especially when one of her goals is to teach her children good, or at least what they have to do in order to appear good. It’s not that Wendy’s behavior is so exemplary since she purposely handed off information Marty tried to pass to Maya to her own contact, which resulted in Maya getting reassigned, which is bad for a lot of reasons. It was worrisome to see Ben go to try to confront Frank Jr. each day, and to see him turn to another innocent outlet to take out his rage when he wouldn’t face him. Invoking Helen as the “family lawyer” really pissed her off, further stretching the viability of her friendship with Wendy, and it also gave him an unreasonable connection to her that meant that, as soon as he got out of the hospital, that she was the one who had left him feeling the angriest. Darlene wants to do anything she can to hurt Wendy, and getting Ben released when she knew that he was unstable was dangerous and vindictive. He didn’t hurt anyone just yet, but things don’t feel good at all. Helen wasn’t even remotely understanding that Marty and Wendy were caught off-guard by Sue being taken out, and their professional relationship is weakening more and more by the minute.
