What I’m Watching: Psych 2

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (B)

It’s been a while since the series “Psych” ended (looking back at my reviews, I think I may have decided not to bother watching the last two seasons) and two and a half years since the first movie aired on USA. Now, this reunion is debuting exclusively on NBC’s new streaming service, Peacock, offering the same kind of mostly funny and entertaining fare this show used to throughout its run. It was fun to see a few actors I’ve enjoyed in other roles, starting with Joel McHale from “Community” and a comedy I liked that was quickly cancelled, “The Great Indoors,” as Lassie’s father. I did look it up because I was curious, and McHale is actually two years younger than Timothy Omundson, who plays Lassie, and who actually had a stroke several years ago. I thought right away that the friendly nurse played by Sarah Chalke from “Scrubs” was going to turn out to be a bad guy, and the crotchety Dr. Herschel, played by Richard Schiff from “The West Wing” and “Counterpart,” just didn’t like Shawn and Gus since he wasn’t actually nefarious aside from the whole truth serum ice chips thing. I also enjoyed the typecasting of Canadian actor Christopher Heyerdahl from “Hell on Wheels” and “True Blood” as the manager of the Norwegian ice bar. We saw Henry and the Chief a little bit, though it was clear that they’ve taken on much smaller supporting roles. Many of the antics were expected, though I’m glad that Gus finally figured out a way to stand up for himself and approve the absurd nicknames Shawn gives him. Many of this movie’s developments were predictable, like Selene being pregnant rather than Juliet, but the way it all played out was fun. As I noted when I reviewed the first movie, this is hardly the first show I would resurrect, but that doesn’t mean I won’t tune in if these characters return again for another misadventure.
