What I’m Watching: Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer: Season 1, Episode 9 “The Train Demanded Blood” (B)

This hour was definitely identifiable as a penultimate installment because a whole lot happened, speeding up the action much more than ever before as this show hurtles towards its first season finale, fully aware and comfortable that a second season is already on the way. The prisoners being brought in for execution by ice was rather brutal and quick, lacking the typical showiness that has dictated train justice thus far in that the only ones intimidated were the next in line to be killed, thereby leaving no examples for the living to fear. Ruth’s desire for a public execution of Melanie didn’t go as planned when she appeared to be fast-tracked only to be rescued instead by Javi, and she made her choice to ally with the tail right away, determining that the selfish desires of first class to reign over the rest would doom the entire train. It wasn’t her fault that the prisoners were in a car that would have to be uncoupled, but that didn’t make the pain of Andre’s fortunate decision to release the car anyway any less harsh. Telling him that he now had the train was an emphatic moment, but only for viewers rather than him since he’s not familiar with her frequent usage of that expression to Bennett or Javi. Their jettison move was indeed daring but appears to have worked, and it will be interesting to see who’s left and how the train moves ahead with a new world order and an eye to an uncertain future.
