What I’m Watching: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist: Season 2, Episode 12 “Zoey's Extraordinary Session” (B)

There were two things about this episode, which was admittedly very engaging, that struck me as strange. One was the absence of Joan, since she was such a formative part of Zoey’s experience at SPRQ Point, and it could have been possible to get Lauren Graham back if Peter Gallagher, another departed series regular, was able to make a return. The second was the complete absence of Simon, who Zoey didn’t meet until later but whose lack of any presence suggests that, though she doesn’t know quite how much Max did for her, Zoey does know that he’s the one she’s meant to be with, even if he’s about to leave for New York with another woman. It was entertaining to see just how poorly they got along at first, and how quickly they managed to work together, to the point that Max encouraged her to go to the hospital and then convinced Danny to give her the job over him. Their heart rate monitor coffeemaker was quite clever, and the fact that Max kept it is telling. I liked the way that Zoey’s powers manifested themselves in ways she didn’t even realize, and though no one – certainly not Mo, the talkative rideshare driver – would describe her as relaxed, she has managed to chill out a good deal since that time. David running into Emily while he was with his completely terrible and self-obsessed girlfriend was sweet, and it was jarring to see Mitch in such good health while Maggie was the one who needed to slow down and contemplate her mortality. Therapy seems to be good for Zoey, and hopefully this is the just the first of many such breakthroughs.
