Round Two: Suits

Suits: Season 1, Episode 2 “Errors and Omissions” (C)

I’d like to stress that I don’t feel that the quality of this second episode dooms this show to failure. I think that the two main story twists presented – that Harvey allegedly slept with the judge’s wife and that Mike is forced to smoke pot with a prospective client by Louis – are both rather weak. Those seem like things that might come up later rather than plague our two players right at the beginning of this series’ run. There’s plenty to be sorted out and dealt with between the two of them without them having to manage these problems, especially when duplicity is involved in both cases, with a nonexistent affair and a fake drug test report. Harvey manages to make himself even more despicable than he already appeared by telling the judge’s wife that he didn’t refuse her advances because of any moral principles but simply because it’s too complicated. The chain of command at the firm is getting to be rather messy, with responsibilities constantly being switched around and passed off to others at the drop of a hat, as well as newbie Mike going in to yell at and threaten Louis. In the midst of all that, Mike is called in for a private meeting with head honcho Jessica, who seems only to involve herself in any unimportant affairs when it’s convenient for the plot. Let’s hope for some refurbished improvement and some stronger, less spectacular storylines in episode three, and a return to the surprising cleverness of the pilot.
