What I’m Watching: Burn Notice

Burn Notice: Season 5, Episode 2 “Bloodlines” (B+)

Week two of this new format turns out to be just as promising as week one, which is a great sign. While not every episode is going to feature Michael having his friends help him out on his actual sanctioned job while he helps them out on a side mission commandeered by an innocent victim or one of his friends, it’s smart that his working relationship with the CIA starts out that way. It’s also a good thing that Max calls Michael out on having an ex-IRA member help him with his job, noting that similar behavior won’t go unnoticed in the future. Of course, what’s most memorable about this episode is Michael’s treatment of his mother while she was playing nurse. It made sense that he took a lead from his father when trying to really upset her, and it was quite frightening. That’s a dramatic side of the Westen family dynamic that we don’t often get to see, and it’s intriguing to blend it with the more action-oriented plot of the yakuza. Madeline is always game for some participation in these spy affairs, especially if asked by Sam, and lighting her cigarette and pointing the gun at the yakuza was an impressionable way to end her charade. It’s fun to see Fiona play a crazy lady, mostly because she’s so good at it. I’m glad that Jesse has found a gig in private security that can keep him tangentially involved in most cases involving Michael, Sam, and Fiona.
