What I’m Watching: Girls

Girls: Season 4, Episode 7 “Ask Me My Name” (B+)

Leave it to Hannah to meet a nice guy who seems like the perfect package and sabotage the first date by bringing him to show off to Adam as proof that she’s moved on. Hopefully we’ll see more of Jake Lacy’s Fran this season since I think he’s a great new character, but of course he can’t possibly be insensitive enough to work in a long-term relationship with Hannah. It wasn’t immediately clear that it was Mimi-Rose’s show that they were attending, but Marnie’s reaction to seeing Hannah demonstrated almost immediately that she should not have been there. Fantastically, Mimi-Rose is not a normal person either, and therefore her response to seeing Hannah was one of genuine, disconcertingly overenthusiastic warmth. She even presented her with an ex of her own, Ace, portrayed by Zachary Quinto of “Heroes” fame. Splitting up the cabs with girls and boys was spectacular, mainly because it featured Adam freaking out while Ace unsubtly broke the news that he is still in love with Mimi-Rose and intends to win her back. Jessa expressing her desire for Ace was entertaining, and I can only imagine how destructive that relationship would be. Mimi-Rose, on the other hand, seemed quite willing to be rid of Adam and give him back to Hannah, and Hannah is right to be skeptical of that offer. The brief snapshot we got of Hannah imparting her intellectual wisdom on others as a substitute teacher was pretty fantastic, particularly her explanation of a modern-day application of Oedipus.
