Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: Season 2, Episode 5 “Zoey’s Extraordinary Trip” (B+)
It’s always a gamble when shows – especially ones that can be considered comedies – have characters do drugs and then show their over-the-top trips. I worried it might not play well here, especially since Aiden as a character just showed up and was all of a sudden the certain attention. I’m not sure I could have hoped for anything as fantastic as Zoey singing “Starships” out on the street with Danny as her backup singer. It’s great when she gets a chance to do the performing, and this was a great excuse that felt organic. I also liked the dramatic turn we got from Simon when he decided to speak up about the lack of representation for people of color within the company’s leadership, and that he’s taking a stand against it rather than doing as he’s told. I’m not sure what Danny Michael Davis selling the company will mean for everyone since the workplace element of the show has actually improved considerably following Joan’s departure, and I think it’s providing good material for all of the characters. It was good to see Max remind Zoey that her not just letting everything go is one of the things he liked most about her, and I was proud of myself for correctly identifying the song Max was singing as “Numb” by Linkin Park. Max’s dad agreeing to give him the money but adding that he would be fine taking a loss was too much for Max, and even though it’s a setback, it’s nice to see him standing by his principles. Jenna’s departure felt abrupt and negative, and I’m glad to see that a character who initially felt like a bit much had a productive impact on everyone else (except for the client, of course).
