The Killing: Season 3, Episode 7 “Hope Kills” (B+)
This episode dramatically reshaped the investigation and the identity of the prime suspect, which is extremely worrisome given that Pastor Mike up until this point was one of the good guys. The fact that Bullet trusts him just makes things worse, and her discovery that Lyric wasn’t there when all of the police cars were gathered around the house was devastating. It didn’t take long for Holder and Linden to find out that Pastor Mike was using a fake identity and then to determine who he was thanks to his prison tattoo. Now that Pastor Mike has Linden at knifepoint in her car, things could get ugly fast, but with five episodes to go this season, I doubt that he’ll be taken out of the equation completely. Danette is being exposed to the reality of her situation in a major way, and her time spent at the police station was both eye-opening and miserable, as her prospects for finding Kallie get lower and lower by the day. Seward’s fate continues to be in jeopardy, as the certainty of his execution becomes clear to him, with Henderson acting far more sympathetic and Becker immune to any kind of forgiving feelings for Seward. That’s not unwarranted, of course, given Seward’s cruel treatment of Becker, who is having his own problems at home. Watching Seward stage a tantrum in his cell when he was told that he couldn’t contact his lawyer was difficult, and knowing that he’s innocent just makes the sense of dread that exists around all of his scenes more agonizing.
