What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst (Season Premiere)

You’re the Worst: Season 2, Episode 1 “The Sweater People” (B+)

I was worried that, in the almost full year since this show ended its first season, I had been building it up in my head. The last few episodes were also a bit iffy, and I wasn’t sure if this show could live up to its initial depraved greatness. Fortunately, this opening installment was great, and I’m now much more confident in this show’s ability to succeed. Jimmy and Gretchen living together is nothing like many new couples’ first experiences, mainly because it involves incessant partying and outvoting poor Edgar who just wanted to get some sleep before he had to go to a job neither of them even realized that he had. Lindsay forcing Gretchen to put on a good face and do butt stuff to avoid being a sweater person was very entertaining, and I like that they continued to have preposterously wild nights until they mutually agreed that they couldn’t keep it up anymore, thanks in part to the horrifying offer of a family phone plan. Lindsay having Paul over and sleeping with him only to discover that he felt bad for cheating on Amy rather than her was a fitting farewell to that character, and I like that Edgar stopped by at that point to comfort her. He’s a tough personality to manage, and I was very pleased to see that he and Lindsay got to have a nice platonic connection which makes both occasionally excessive characters much easier to bear, and even endearing at that!
