Westworld: Season 2, Episode 3 “Virtù e Fortuna” (B+)
Opening this episode with two tiger hunters meeting each other in another very differently-themed section of the park was extremely intriguing, and it shows that all of the hosts are waking up and behaving in a way that they really shouldn’t be. It appears that hosts programmed to be hostile Native Americans are showing up everywhere, which caused Maeve to freeze for the first time in a while since she remembers them breaking up her family from when she had a daughter. It’s so interesting to see how hosts remember parts of their past lives, with Dolores so overwhelmed when she saw her father and him returning the sentiment before starting to malfunction again. Charlotte, ever the resourceful, systematic executive, managed to get away when Peter proclaimed himself to be loyal to the cause, leaving Bernard stranded and ready for what could have been a problematic face-to-face with Dolores but instead resulted in her asking him to fix her father. A very scary-looking Clementine managed to knock him out before he got away, though the flashes to future times assure us that he somehow survived, much to Charlotte’s amazement since apparently she didn’t think much of him. There’s no denying the incredible production values of this show and the epic battle between futuristic technology and old-West fortifications, with Dolores at the helm and ready to sacrifice anyone she needs to in order to achieve her aims. She and Maeve continue to charge ahead, and though they’re not sure exactly what they’ll encounter, they’re not showing any signs of slowing down.
