What I’m Watching: Home Economics (Season Premiere)

Home Economics: Season 2, Episode 1 “49ers Foam Finger, $7” (B)

I’ll be honest, I don’t think I imagined this show would live past its inaugural seven-episode first season, and so it’s a nice treat to have it back and have more of a chance to get to know its characters. As has been the case in the past, some of it is definitely exaggerated, like Tom’s inability to even pretend that he knew anything about football and embarrass himself by droning on with basic facts that showed his complete lack of knowledge. Getting selected as a fan in the stand to kick a field goal was an unfortunate turn of events, and even though he did make it, he still got mocked relentlessly for his follow-through. Connor came to his defense eventually but was much more excited to be able to supply earlier evidence of Tom’s sports mishaps for the network reporting on his pratfall. I liked that Marina was the obvious choice to come into the box, though she was awfully quick to pretend to be Connor’s wife rather than his sister-in-law. Denise telling Sarah that Kelvin wanted to be a cheerleader to show her how the support and enthusiasm she mustered was hypocritical since she held Shamiah to a different standard as a girl was brilliant, and while Sarah’s show of spirit was rather embarrassing, it was a true open-minded gesture that her daughter seemed to really appreciate. Shamiah and Kelvin getting on the jumbotron was a nice touch, so unbelievably thrilled about that shared moment of fleeting fame.
