The top contenders:

The Rejected (Mad Men)
The Suitcase (Mad Men)
The Summer Man (Mad Men)
Tomorrowland (Mad Men)
Waldorf Stories (Mad Men)
Pilot (Shameless)
Days Gone Bye (The Walking Dead)

The roundup: Though only ten shows are seriously in the running, several – namely the HBO and AMC series – have submitted so many strong episodes that it’s near impossible to determine which of them will ultimately make the cut. This is a category where new shows that might earn next to recognition in other categories can be recognized, which means that the pilots of Game of Thrones, The Killing, and The Walking Dead all have a great shot. The Martin Scorsese-helmed pilot of Boardwalk Empire is a lock, and “The Suitcase” is probably the standout episode of Mad Men. While such a high number of pilots aren’t usually included, that does make sense as a logical list. Watch out for plenty of other “Mad Men” episodes, the “Missing” episode of “The Killing,” as well as the Friday Night Lights series finale.

The predicted nominees: Pilot (Boardwalk Empire), Winter Is Coming/Pilot (Game of Thrones), Pilot (The Killing), The Suitcase (Mad Men), Days Gone Bye/Pilot (The Walking Dead)

The predicted winner: Pilot (Boardwalk Empire)
