What I’m Watching: Modern Family

Modern Family: Season 3, Episode 12 “Egg Drop” (B+)

This show has become good at covering ground that’s already been tread and still pulling something fresh and new out of it. It’s been established many times before that Jay and Claire are extremely competitive, and seeing them get so invested in Manny and Luke’s egg drop project was a blast. The fact that Alex was the only one who actually knew how to do it properly was an added bit of fun, and also that Manny and Luke admitted to tricking their parents into doing the project for them even though they could totally have gotten away with it. Cameron and Mitchell’s situation was peculiar at best, and it did produce a few laughs even if it wasn’t entirely hilarious. What I really enjoyed was Gloria’s underlining of her sense of family, talking about how yelling means that people really love each other. Phil has tried before to rally his family to support him to little avail, and of course things were going to be doomed this time around as some extra time before the presentation meant that Gloria and Haley had time to go get their nails done. The car getting towed was funny, and so was Gloria’s insistence that the sign had not been there before, but what really drove it home was Gloria yelling at Phil to yell at her, which in turn made him upset and ready to forgive her. This is one endearing and wonderful family unit, and it’s great to see them bond in their own unique ways.

Don't you mean Gloria and Haley had time to get their nails done? Sorry, I just caught that. Anyway, yes, this was a pretty funny episode, although one of my favorite moments was Mitch and Cam singing Don't Go Breaking My Heart (partly because I'm an Elton John fan). This was also one of my favorite Phil stories...

Yes, I did mean Gloria and Haley. Alex doesn't seem much inclined to get her nails done. The Mitch and Cam storyline didn't do much for me, but the Phil storyline was great. He's still my favorite character.
