What I’m Watching: The Big C

The Big C: Season 3, Episode 5 “Face Off” (B+)

When everything seems to be going right, it’s almost a sure thing that things are about to implode. Not everything is going swimmingly for the Jamison family, but against all odds, they’ve managed to convince a family to give them their child. Hamish Linklater of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and Mamie Gummer of “The Good Wife” and “Off the Map” were the parents-to-be who apparently were impressed enough with Adam’s stories of his childhood to decide then and there that Cathy and Paul should be the adoptive parents. Adam’s ending comment to Cathy was quite cruel, though she didn’t do herself any favors by pulling him out of his church meeting and being rather disrespectful to Pastor Rick. Meeting Adams’ new girlfriend when she didn’t know that he had broken up with his previous girlfriend was rather jolting, and as Cathy yearns for a new baby, she and her existing child are drifting further and further apart. Paul’s first few minutes on stage were extraordinarily awkward, but after being jolted by Andrea, or Ababu, as she’s getting to be known, he managed to save the show and coin a pretty cool catchphrase. Unfortunately, Joy is going to prove to be a very negative force in the road towards adoption since she will want him to be focused entirely on their speaking tours, which is sure to be just the latest reason that Cathy doesn’t quite buy that Joy has the best intentions of her devoted followers in mind.
