What I’m Watching: Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad: Season 5, Episode 13 “To’hajiilee” (B+)

I’m not sure there’s been a point on this show at which things have been any worse, which is all the more worrisome given the jovial attitude of one particularly determined DEA agent. Walt definitely didn’t see the price of his hired hit coming, and he’s much too distracted to be able to function, as evidenced by the fact that the trap he tried to spring to lure Jesse out into the open failed and Jesse’s idea worked like a charm. Walt needs to be much more careful about the guys he hires, and the moment bullets started flying, it was all over. Ending the episode with Walt ducking for cover in the car was a thrilling way to cut to black, and things are certainly going to be different when he comes up for air. This episode contained a number of smaller but equally significant moments, like Lydia explaining to Todd and his uncle that the product needed to be blue, which even Todd couldn’t admit that it was. I like the odd relationship that Lydia and Todd seem to have, though it’s doubtful that their partnership will survive the latest turn of events. Jesse pointing Hank and Gomez to Huell was a great idea, and it was entertaining to see him react to the news of his alleged impending demise, more hurt than anything that Walt would go after him when he never did anything to him. Kudos to Hank for listening to Andrea’s message and dismissing it immediately.
