What I’m Watching: Dexter (Penultimate Episode)

Dexter: Season 8, Episode 11 “Monkey in a Box” (B+)

It’s hard to believe that there’s just one hour left in this show, but things definitely feel like they’re reaching a great endpoint that represents a full circle for these characters. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily a good thing for our beloved characters. Deb and Dexter working together to try to stop Saxon was wonderful to see, and the best moment was when Deb smiled after she helped subdue Saxon in Dexter’s apartment. Dexter’s realization that he didn’t need to kill was an important one, but he still should have eliminated Saxon before he solved one problem for Dexter – Clayton – but introduced another one, which was the severe state in which Deb was left at the end of the episode. For Dexter to lose Deb would be tragic enough, and I can just imagine what he has planned for Hannah and Harrison. The looming threat of a tropical storm was an excellent way of giving the episode a foreboding feel, and seeing Dexter actually try to sell his boat and meet with a realtor abut his apartment indicates that he’s far too serious about leaving, suggesting that it couldn’t possibly work out as easily as it seems it might. I’m becoming more convinced that Saxon is a suitable villain for the final season of this show, since he represents what Dexter could have become if he hadn’t had anyone in his life looking out for him, and I’m sure he’s going to leave a painful mark on Dexter’s life. No matter what, next week’s finale, which will be the first thing I watch after the Emmys, is sure to be extremely memorable, and I can’t wait.
