What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 4, Episode 9 “Thanksgiving IV” (B+)

I’m ecstatic to report that, after a miserable season so far, this show demonstrated that it’s not done delivering good installments just yet. I’ll concede that the setup of this episode – a sex party where everyone brings a date for someone else – was a bit formulaic, but it produced a hilarious and entertaining half-hour, so I’m fine with it. There wasn’t a weak link in this bunch, as every plotline paid off. I like just how caught up Winston got in the idea of his date being a lunchlady, and how that turned into flirtation and ultimately a bit of themed foreplay with some oven mitts and an apron worn earlier in the episode by Jess. Coach having a physical rival who was stronger than him could have ended up being silly, but instead they bonded over that and turned it into something competitive and energizing. Nick bringing Tran was unsurprising, and who knew that he had a granddaughter who may just be sophisticated enough to make Nick not feel bad about himself? Schmidt and Cece conceding that they were on each other’s “never” lists and playing games together was sweet, and Cece dismissing her late date by pretending she didn’t speak English was telling of her connection with Schmidt. And then there’s Jess, who managed to offend Ryan by saying she just wanted to get their flirtation over with by having sex before stopping by for a truly romantic and memorable night, highlighted by her insistence that Rooney is the hero of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” This episode makes me hopeful, and I look forward to more episodes of this show like this.
