iZombie: Season 4, Episode 2 “Blue Bloody” (B+)
Having Clive be aware that Liv is on a particular brain and that’s the reason for her peculiar behavior is an unexpectedly fantastic addition to this show. His reactions to the things she said and did that didn’t fit with her regular character were hilarious to begin with, and now that’s amplified considerably in a great way, especially in an episode in which she treated him like her black chauffeur. What helped to enhance this show dramatically was what happened when Liv started to come down from the brain and advocated to save the kid, putting her and Ravi face-to-face with Major in the middle of his job. Things are tempestuous enough as it is without Major having to contend with breaking the law by letting a case of human smuggling go. This show has never dealt with themes quite this intense before, and I’m both intrigued and impressed with how it’s handling it so far. At the same time, it’s managing to keep its episodes entertaining with the cases it chooses and newfound selections like the impossibility of the murdered woman’s son being the one to have killed her given his being in another city across the country from the walled-off Seattle. Clive asking Ravi for help with tempering his sex drive given his inability to have sex with Dale was a fun subplot, and it’s good to see that they’re going strong despite her having been turned into a zombie. Angus’ zombie cult seems to be growing, and it’s only a matter of time before they cause real problems for all the good zombies in Seattle.
