Golden Globe Predictions: Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy or Drama Series

I’ve been predicting the Golden Globe nominations for more than fifteen years, and even if the group doesn’t have the same industry relevance as in the past, it’s still helpful and fun to see what shows and performances get honored. Here’s my assessment of the contenders in this category.

Last year’s nominees:
Billy Crudup (The Morning Show)
Kieran Culkin (Succession)
Mark Duplass (The Morning Show)
Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso)
Oh Young-soo (Squid Game)

This category is newly focused on just comedy and drama without limited series or TV movie contenders, which is still a blend of two very different fields. From the Emmy nominees in both corresponding races last year, two-time past nominee Henry Winkler (Barry) and John Turturro (Severance) are the best bets, and could be joined by costars Anthony Carrigan (Barry) and Christopher Walken (Severance) if their shows go over well. Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is also a possibility, though he hasn’t been nominated for a Globe for this role despite five bids and one win for “Monk.” Tyles James Williams (Abbott Elementary) is a possible fresh face following his Emmy nod, and previous Emmy nominees like Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), and David Harbour (Stranger Things) could also join him. Matt Smith (House of the Dragon) and Jonathan Pryce (The Crown) feel like good bets, while I’m less confident about Claes Bang (Bad Sisters) and Brandon Scott Jones (Ghosts), even though I’d be thrilled to see them cited. They could easily be bumped by John Lithgow (The Old Man), Taika Waititi (Our Flag Means Death), Stellan Skarsgård (Andor), Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows), or Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Current predictions:
Claes Bang (Bad Sisters)
Jonathan Pryce (The Crown)
Matt Smith (House of the Dragon)
John Turturro (Severance)
Henry Winkler (Barry)
