What I’m Watching: Glee

Glee: Season 1, Episode 21 “Funk” (B-)

It’s hard to find this episode believable by any stretch of the imagination, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun. I know that’s never been the point of this show, but this episode in particular took things pretty far. I did have the benefit of watching this hour with two very emotive spectators who were appalled by Will making a move on Sue and Terri contemplating making a move on Finn. Will’s seduction of Sue is just silly, really, and Sue’s refusal to do something nice for Will in exchange for his show of compassion should serve to negate any possibility that she actually has any feelings at all. It was occasionally amusing, but nothing more. Regarding Terri’s return, it’s puzzling to me that she keeps on coming back, very much like a cockroach. As far as I can tell, she’s despised universally by fans, and the glee club and their director have enough problems without her sexual scheming. It’s important to remember that her potential affair with Finn is truly crossing the line, because despite actor Cory Monteith being 28 years old, his character is supposed to be a mere sixteen. Quinn’s display of funk was altogether too ridiculous, and I’ll thank my fellow episode viewers for their repeated emphasis of the fact that women who are eight months pregnant can not move around like that. We’re building next week toward the inevitable Regionals, and it’s really about time. There’s been a lot of treading water on this show in terms of moving the story forward one centimeter at a time, and hopefully next week will provide some fulfillment. This show sure will be around a long time – it was renewed a few weeks ago for a third season. Even though the second one hasn’t even begun yet, some people are counting on this show succeeding wildly for the next few years. Or just trying to make sure the stars don’t sign other contracts.
