What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs (Mid-Season Premiere)

Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 11 “The Wake-Up Bomb” (B+)

Somewhat out of the blue, as is often the case with USA series, this spy show is back, presenting a different Annie than the one we’ve seen before. Being honest with Danielle turns out not to have had positive effects, as her sister is being perfectly civil but is entirely committed to having her move out of the house and, as a result, into her safe house. Auggie seems like her only friend in the world right now, giving her a bottle opener and asking her not to tell him the location of her safe house, even covering his eyes so that he wouldn’t see in what direction she was headed. Starting the episode off in Venice was fun, and the scene after he contact got killed immediately following the handoff was action-packed, ending in a rather anticlimactic theft of the bag after she fell down. Back at home, this was the perfect time for Annie to meet a guy like Zavier, if only he weren’t the latest target of a CIA investigation. It was sweet that Zavier came to Annie’s rescue at the end and tried to take down his brother, proclaiming that he would never betray his brother. Jai’s efforts to get ahead at the CIA seem to have paid off, though his father is not happy at all about where he’s ended up. I’m not sure what role he’ll have in the near future, but it will presumably give him more responsibility and put him at odds with Joan and Annie and that whole team.
