Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Edie Falco, Tina Fey, Laura Linney, Melissa McCarthy, Martha Plimpton, Amy Poehler

The competition: An influx of new contenders this year could mean the ousting of up to four of last year’s nominees. Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) are probably safe, but the same can’t be said for the rest. Laura Linney (The Big C) has two seasons to work with this year, but that may not help her, and voters can probably discard Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), especially since she was rewarded already for this role. Last year’s freshman nominees Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) and Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly), the winner, may or may not be back. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) is almost guaranteed to be back, mostly because this show, unlike the previous one that still netted her five nominations, is actually good. Golden Globe winner Laura Dern (Enlightened) is a good bet, as is Zooey Deschanel (New Girl). Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) and past nominee Christina Applegate (Up All Night) may show up, but I think the last slot will go to a breakout HBO star who also happens to run her own show, Lena Dunham (Girls).

The predicted nominees: Laura Dern, Zooey Deschanel, Lena Dunham, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Poehler

The predicted winner: Amy Poehler

Next up: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
