Common Law: Season 1, Episode 7 “Role Play” (B+)
This show is getting sillier and sillier, but it’s still a lot of fun. Wes’ choice of jazz as pump-up music was but one of the problems ailing this odd couple in this hour, but having them pretend to be the other as part of an extended role-play scenario was both highly disruptive and extremely amusing. Wes’ performance as Travis was particularly lamentable, though he did manage to get the job done. Travis’ excitement at being able to prove Wes wrong after he called him out on only owning one suit was hilariously destroyed when Jonelle unsubtly cut off the price tag still attached. Their antics actually helped to solve the case, as they had the captain do some role playing of his own to see if Beth would have been able to tie herself up, which ultimately led to their conclusion that her sister Suzan was the one who killed her, a conclusion reached thanks to the confirmation that she was in fact left-handed. Kevin, the husband, was a rather oddly sympathetic figure, proclaiming his weakness for alcohol and promptly volunteering to have his guilt considered, so dismayed to think that he might have killed his wife that he was about to end his own life. For their efforts, Travis and Wes received equal commendation and mockery from the group, and it may be true that this is their first real breakthrough, discovering that they need each other, even if they show it by making each other’s lives extremely difficult.
