Hung: Season 1, Episode 5 “Do It, Monkey” (B+)
I barely recognized Natalie Zea, fresh from playing the wacky Karen Darling on “Dirty Sexy Money,” as Jemma. It’s too bad that the character is really interesting but the role isn’t, because Zea is capable of playing a whole lot of crazy. Hopefully she’ll recur on the show for a while, and her character will become an integral part of the series and of Ray’s life. I enjoy that Ray is trying so hard to please this one particular client and it’s extremely entertaining to see the flat-tire scenario play out over and over and over again. I also loved that Jemma called Tanya to get her to coach Ray and that she called him right there on the spot to tell him exactly to say. What makes this show rich and poignant is the dramatic ending which shows Ray being truly committed to his job and going the extra mile to please an insatiable client. Tanya’s relationship is frustrating, but it’s glad to see she’s not just lying down and letting him manipulate her. Managing Ray has given her a newfound strength she didn’t have before, and that’s refreshing to see. I’m also amused by the fact that Ronnie’s loss of wealth is such a deal breaker for all the members of his family, and that Ray’s the one who may actually have enough money to buy his kids a car.
“Hung” was renewed last week for a second season – there’s still a whole slew of episodes this season, but it will be back for another round next summer.
