V: Season 1, Episode 4 “It’s Only the Beginning” (B)
This episode’s title is indicative of what this show wants to promise excited viewers since the show won’t be back on the air for at least a couple of months. What’s extremely strong about this mid-season finale is the opposing forces that are becoming increasingly clear and solidified. Though he may not be long for this world, what with his stabbing, Father Jack is showing some serious skills in the field, and teaming him up with Ryan and Erica makes for a pretty impressive team. It’s very interesting to learn more about Ryan, and hearing the fury in his voice after Georgio talks about skinning a V was a nice moment to remind that this guy is still an alien. It’s good that Erica found out about Ryan’s identity now rather than later, and it’s also helpful that she knows about the existence of the Fifth Column. That rebel organization really does seem to be powerful, with both of the main medical personnel on the V mothership being fiercely loyal to the cause. I’m eager to see Joshua connect with Ryan and help establish a fearsome resistance to the alien invaders. Their advanced medical technology is a good way of making Chad relevant, and also revealing that Valerie is pregnant, which is a huge deal considering her child will be a human-V hybrid. Anna is impressive and intimidating both as the leader of the Vs and as Lisa’s mother. The humongous fleet of alien ships waiting somewhere in the distant galaxy to invade means that everything has become much, much bigger, and that the Fifth Column is going to have to be incredibly strong to defeat this massive threat. I’m looking forward to further episodes of this series, and I think some time off should increase my excitement a bit. Hopefully it will be paired with “Lost” sometime in the spring; I think the two could work well together.
