What I’m Watching: Enlightened

Enlightened: Season 1, Episode 8 “Comrades Unite!” (B+)

There's a certain point at which it's hard to feel bad for Amy. Part of what makes her such an appealing character is that she's completely oblivious to how everyone else perceives her, and that trait become more than a bit grating in this particular episode. Tyler is finally vocalizing his feelings, expressing just how much Amy leans on him and pointing out that, despite Dougie's targeting of her because of her behavior at the club, she is consistently late and doesn't do any work. Asking what Congentiva is was particularly unproductive, and it seems that, though things worked out for her in the end, most of her coworkers now despise her. Her run-in with Damon was surprisingly tame and not nearly as negative as might have been unexpected, but the most important development was her realization that Krista is no longer her friend. That leaves Amy rather friendless at the moment, though I suspect that Tyler will soon forgive her, and she may even have made a new friend in Connie. I’m curious how Dougie is going to act towards her going forward, since he seemed quite angry in this installment but never actually addressed her. I did like that Amy was able to devote herself to a cause, that of the united striking workers, without involving everyone in the office. She’s found serenity, and sometimes the best way for someone to keep that kind of serenity is to keep it to themselves rather than sharing it with others.
