What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 3, Episode 11 “Clavado En Un Bar” (B-)

This episode wasn’t terrible, but it really wasn’t all that intelligent either. This show can do better than an episode spent recounting silly experiences to help Jess make a simple but impactful life decision. None of the characters on this show have particularly serious or compelling careers, and seeing how each of them got there was merely a defense of their personalities, with a few funny moments mixed in. This show is at its best when it shows its characters doing silly things for good reasons, and in this case it was all about silly things for silly reasons, like Schmidt selling Christmas trees to win over a type of girl or Nick taking the bar exam and passing it but still deciding to become a bartender because that’s what he wanted to do. A show like “Friends” never tried to provide the logic of how several of its members could afford a preposterously large apartment in Manhattan without ever really going to work, and I don’t think this show needs to address the employment of its characters in a legitimate manner either. The notion of Jess having to co-teach and using frogs as a reward for successfully completing math problems is considerably more amusing, and that’s what this episode should have been more about. I like seeing Cece as the world’s worst bartender-in-training, not putting much effort in other than to slide glasses down the bar at people with little hope of them arriving to the person that ordered them intact.
