What I’m Watching: The Closer

The Closer: Season 5, Episode 4 “Walking Back The Cat” (B+)

It must be true sometimes that Major Crimes Unit doesn’t have much on their caseload, and therefore need something to do. This was a fun exercise in cooperating with the FBI, something the show has come close to before, but never like this, with all of the members of Major Crimes posing as and referring to each other as FBI agents. The dynamic of Fritz and Brenda has always been a driving force of the series, and having Fritz, for a change, ask for a favor only moments after he tries to hide away the ashes of their dead (female) cat is fun. I enjoyed both Fritz and the other FBI agent as they struggled to interact with the members of Major Crimes without saying too much or giving anything away. The doctor’s amusement at the cops’ lack of knowledge about Hell-A (spelling?) was funny, and a wonderful tribute to the fantastic recurring characters on this show. The highlight of this particular episode is probably Lieutenant Provenza bringing in his girlfriend slash personal shopper and introducing them to the team – and Detective Sanchez thinking a good way to break the ice would be to ask how old she was. Brenda didn’t seem to like that one too much; fortunately, on behalf of the audience, I found it quite funny.
