Gravity: Season 1, Episode 2 “Namaste MF” (B-)
I’m still mixed on what exactly this show is trying to be. It’s an occasionally entertaining half-hour which otherwise is just peculiar and is more than a bit unfocused. I did enjoy Detective Miller’s comment about the yoga police, but otherwise his entire investigation just reeks of stalking. The scene that did draw me in incredibly was the introduction of Carla, played by the marvelous Robyn Cohen. I was blown away by how she first appeared, suddenly visible as the sea of people parted around her. The quick montage showcasing the ups (and not really any downs) of her life up to her suicide attempt was very informative and fascinating, and she almost immediately became the most interesting character on the show. Her interaction with her insanely doting husband and the way she walks around trying out the idea of not being perfect is just so intriguing. I particularly enjoyed her reaction to her mother calling a moment after she finally stepped in a crack, going against her rule of “step in the crack, break your mother’s back.” While the dynamic between Lilly and Robert is somewhat entertaining, I’m not altogether convinced that he’s a very dynamic character. For the one who’s supposed to be considered a suicide dummy, he’s awfully serious and doesn’t play much to that. Lilly, on the other hand, does have a lot of fun making a fool out of herself by making speeches that, according to Robert, sound good but really don’t make much sense at all.
